Canada Grains Council Supports Renewal and Strengthening of CUSMA/USMCA/T-MEC
Ottawa, ON (June 2, 2026) – The Canada Grains Council (CGC) is pleased to join nearly 160 agricultural organizations from across Canada, the United States and Mexico in signing a trilateral industry letter supporting the renewal and strengthening of the Canada-United States- Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), known in the United States as USMCA and in Mexico as T-MEC.
The joint letter, signed by organizations representing the North American food and agriculture value chain, highlights the critical role CUSMA/USMCA/T-MEC plays in supporting integrated agricultural markets, strengthening regional food security, and maintaining North America’s global competitiveness.
“North American agriculture depends on stable, predictable and science-based trade relationships,” said Erin Gowriluk, President of the Canada Grains Council. “CUSMA has created significant opportunities for grain producers, exporters and processors across the continent, while strengthening food security and economic resilience in all three countries.”
The trilateral letter notes that agricultural trade between Canada, the United States and Mexico has expanded significantly under the agreement, with agrifood trade between the three countries tripling in value between 2005 and 2023 to reach $285 billion. The organizations also emphasized the importance of maintaining strong sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) and technical barriers to trade (TBT) provisions that support science-based regulation and regulatory cooperation.
“Continued trilateral cooperation is essential to ensuring North American agriculture remains competitive in an increasingly uncertain global environment,” added Gowriluk. “At a time when producers and supply chains are facing rising costs, market volatility and geopolitical uncertainty, maintaining a strong trilateral trade agreement is more important than ever.”
The Canada Grains Council remains committed to working collaboratively with industry partners and governments across North America to support open, predictable and rules-based trade that benefits farmers, exporters and consumers alike.
