An Open Letter to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Mark Carney

Dear Prime Minister Carney,

On behalf of the grains sector, please accept my warmest congratulations on your election victory. You assume office at a time of both significant challenge and immense opportunity. With the right leadership, Canada can not only weather today’s storms but emerge stronger, more resilient, and better positioned to lead on the global stage.

My name is Erin Gowriluk, and I have the honour of serving as President of the Canada Grains Council—a national association representing grain farmers, exporters, processors, and life science companies. We have the full value chain under our umbrella – model of collaboration that is truly unique to Canada.

Collaboration and cooperation will no doubt be essential themes as you begin your tenure as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister. You have secured a minority government, a feat which only a few months ago seemed implausible for the Liberal Party – and for that, you should be commended. In your acceptance speech, you acknowledged the need to serve and to represent the interests of every Canadian regardless of where they reside, or who they voted for.

National unity, amongst Canadians and the federal parties that represent them, will be critical as we face unprecedented challenges. As you look to rally the nation around a shared vision for growth and renewal, we encourage you to see Canadian agriculture—particularly the grain sector—as a national unity project in action. Farming communities in every province stand ready to help drive Canada’s economic recovery. Our sector is primed for growth, and with the right support, can be a powerful engine of prosperity for all Canadians.

When I meet with my international colleagues, I often hear the same refrain “the world needs more Canada.” At a time of growing global uncertainty, our international partners are looking to us for leadership. Canada’s long-standing reputation for trusted, principled diplomacy gives us the credibility—and the responsibility—to lead. Let’s use this moment to champion open trade, science-based standards, and democratic values—not just in agriculture, but across the global economy. Let’s seize this moment to show what principled, pragmatic leadership looks like.

Here at home, clear and science-based regulations are essential to keeping Canada competitive. They encourage innovation, attract investment, and reinforce our reputation as a reliable agri-food supplier to the world. We encourage your government to work with industry and our global partners to ensure policy decisions reflect practical realities and recognize the economic and strategic value of Canadian agriculture.

Canada’s grain sector delivers safe, sustainable, and high-volume production that feeds millions worldwide. But our ability to remain globally competitive depends on timely access to new technologies and regulatory clarity. Innovation can only succeed when supported by a predictable regulatory environment—one that fosters investment and accelerates progress rather than delaying it. Prime Minister, we are optimistic about the road ahead and stand ready to work with you and your government to strengthen Canada’s economy, promote unity, and build a prosperous future for all.

With sincere congratulations and best wishes for the work ahead,

Erin K. Gowriluk
President, Canada Grains Council
